by An absolutely heart-breaking news surfaced in the pop industry on November 18, when Havana singer Camilla Cabello and Stitches singer, Shawn Mendes decided to part ways after two years of an intense, fiery romantic interlude. The news came as a shock to both eminent personalities within the industry as well as their fans all over the world, who would ship them throughout. The two singers announced on their Instagram Stories that the time had come to pull the plug off the relationship but continue staying on the best of terms, the way they set out as before this. The two were friends for years before they became romantically involved in July 2019.
Both the singers shared identical Instagram stories that read like this, “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever ❤️ We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward ❤️❤️❤️Camila and Shawn”
According to rumours, the two had decided to call it quits and probably have done so much earlier than this, but came out with a public statement later when the 24 year old singer and former band member of the all-girls’ Fifth Harmony was overheard talking about a breakup on a flight. That sparked rumours that maybe the two have split up, and indeed it proved to be true amid much speculations.
Cabello (as a member of Fifth Harmony) and Mendes meet while they are both opening acts for Austin Mahone’s tour. Soon they start hanging out together but mostly as friends, with Mendes sharing a pretty high opinion of her at that time. In November 2015, they collaborated and dropped the single I Know What You Did Last Summer, which went onto become a chart topper and the hottest hit almost overnight. The official video from the song was too steamy for fans to interpret it just as two friends casually collaborating and sparked dating rumours. The two started collaborating off-stage as well with Mendes regularly commenting on her posts and videos and showering affection.
During an interview with Beats 1, Mendes calls Cabello his “favourite person in the whole world,” and “I don’t think you’ll ever meet somebody who can feel emotion like her, in all aspects,” he continued. “She can feel hurt like no other, but she can feel love like no other.”
However once the two brought out Senorita relationship speculation started anew and by July 2019, the two engaged in heavy bouts of PDA much to the excitement of their fans. They also partied together on the 4th of July. They were caught kissing by TMZ in San Francisco.
Over the years the two have been quite open in professing their love, adulation and admiration for each other and each other’s work. On November 26, Cabello chatted with BBC Radio 1’s Greg James and responded to everyone criticizing her PDA with Mendes—particularly when she and her beau posted a make-out video to Instagram. When a fan called in with an “unpopular opinion” claiming “public displays of affection on Instagram are too much,” the 22-year-old took it personally.
Although they didn’t reveal the real reasons behind their breakup, a source close to both of the stars, reported that they have been experiencing relationship problems for quite sometime but came back from it stronger. This time unfortunately they couldn’t work it out and both were pretty devastated at parting ways after such a wonderful time together but still choose to stay “best of friends” like before.
