SATC star Kim Cattrall to voice over HIMYM spin-off; sends fans into a frenzy

There’s big news for HIMYM fans – their favourite show spanning 9 seasons and 208 episodes is finally getting a spin-off and this time it will be narrated by none other than the actress who played Samantha Jones, Kim Cattrall. The news about casting was revealed only recently by the producers at an interview and would be broadcast on Hulu and Star networks originally. The release date is set for next year, 2022 and the HIMYM fandom could not be more excited.

For those who need an introduction to the sitcom, How I met your mother was originally aired on CBS, created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays. With an all American cast including some famous celebrities like Alyson Hannigan, Cobie Smulders, Jason Segel and Neil Patrick Harris, the show basically chronicles the lives of five friends living in Manhattan and juggling work and dating lives together with the protagonist Ted Mosby, played by Josh Radnor ultimately finding the love of his life, the girl he’s about to marry and have a family with. The show portrayed Ted, or Radnor some 30 years down the line sitting at his apartment in New York, narrating to his kids how he met their mother, played by Christin Millioti. Each episode would have a voiceover sequence courtesy of the protagonist, Ted, usually lent by Bob Saget .  The Full House star did his character justice as an older Ted narrating with a certain maturity and wisdom in his voice that and the different actors helped separate the timelines to illustrate how the character has changed over the years.

Six years after HIMYM drew down its curtains, talks have been making round about airing a spin-off show, only it would be now How I met your Father, where the protagonist Sophie would instead take Ted’s place in narrating to her kids at some future date how she met and married their father. The choice for Sophie is none other than actress Hilary Duff who has previously starred in a lot of American commercial movies like A Cinderella Story with Chad Michael Murray, the teen sitcom “The Lizzy McGuire Show” and more recently a Comedy Central sitcom, “Younger”. Created by Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker, the new romantic comedy is supposed to be of 10 episodes only, set to be premiered on Hulu with most of the creators and directors from the original version to be retained for the spinoff as well in the role of executive producers and the like.

But what has taken the fans by a pleasant surprise is the lead female voiceover would be done by Kim Cattrall who is famous for playing the sexually independent, assertive and true feminist icon, Samantha Jones from Sex and the City. How I Met Your Father’s narrator casting improves on the original due to its meta-approach, zeroing on a strong connection between narrator and show, and Cattrall’s involvement might boost the spinoff’s viewership, as per the casting directors. Considering the backdrop of the show to be New York City and it would heavily feature Sophie and her friends navigating through the city’s fast-paced urban dating life and work culture, Cattrall has previously played a similar character in SATC and would undoubtedly bring out her best to the show. Infusing the narration with an equally engaging humour, boldness and confidence, it’s sure to become a show stealer. Cattrall’s association with Sex and the City can also attract more viewers, likely appealing to those disappointed by the actor choosing not to return for HBO Max’s revival of SATC, “And Just Like That…”

How the critics review this spin-off show though, remains to be seen but as for fans, it is definitely going to be legen-wait-for-it-dary!!
