The two celebrities starred together as the main love interest and protagonists, Jonathan Harker and Mina Murray in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. While speaking to the Guardian in an exclusive interview about the movie, Coppola went on to say that he had hired an actual priest for their wedding scene. When probed further, the director expressed quote candidly that it was his intention to lend an intriguing, realistic yet dramatic aura to the scene and hence his decision to hire an actual Roman catholic priest to preside over the ceremony. The scene as it proceeds shows Ryder’s Mina being possessed and enraptured by Dracula, the vampire and only marriage to Harker under the watchful eyes of the Almighty might save her from this demonic invasion.
Both the actors received intense popularity and fame with their portrayals in Dracula and share a strong bond. Since the movie’s release, Keanu and Winona have also appeared together in 2006’s A Scanner Darkly, 2009’s The Private Lives of Pippa Lee and 2018’s Destination Wedding. In a recent interview with Winona, the actress revealed the actual details of the wedding scene and how they might actually be married given the entire ceremony was not only conducted to the T but also presided over by a real Roman catholic priest.
“We actually got married in Dracula. No, I swear to god I think we’re married in real life,” she said in a joint interview with Keanu at the time. “We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So I think we’re married.”
Winona also reminded Keanu in the course of the interview that the scene had actually been shot on Valentine’s Day to which the 37-year-old actor joked, “Oh my gosh, we’re married.”
Later in an interview with Esquire released on Monday, Nov. 22 on the onset of the release of his movie, Matrix Resurrections, he was again asked to clarify on his marital status to the actress. Keanu took it quite sportingly saying, “We did a whole take of a marriage ceremony with real priests. Winona says we are. Coppola says we are. So I guess we’re married under the eyes of God.”
He later explained, “I didn’t really believe her, and then Francis Ford Coppola, the director of Dracula, contacted Winona and said publicly that, yeah, that really happened, the priest did a full ceremony and Winona and I got married.”
Despite such wonderful camaraderie between the two co-stars however they have their respective long term partners, with Keanu dating artist Alexandra Grant since 2018 and Ryder dating Scott Mackinlay Hahn since 2011.
