Elon Musk and singer-songwriter, Claire Boucher, known as Grimes welcomed their son in May 2020 and immediately sparked controversy regarding their son’s name, X Æ A-12. Grimes, who considers herself a visual artist, was first linked to Tesla CEO Elon Musk in May 2018. After weathering split rumours throughout their relationship, the “Genesis” singer announced she was pregnant in January 2020. It wasn’t until two months later that Grimes confirmed Musk was the father.
Now the parents have taken Instagram by storm, posting pictures of their baby boy and encapsulating his daily activities and frolic in their timeline. Grimes later revealed the inspiration behind the unique moniker, which previously was X Æ A-12 but later had to be changed to X AE A-XII, as per the law. X was supposed to be the unknown variable, Æ, her elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence), A-12 the precursor to SR-17, the couple’s favourite aircraft.
“No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent + (A = Archangel, my favorite song) (metal rat),” she added later. “I think it sounds like the name of the main character in the story. I hope he vibes with that. OK, going back into the pain/ beauty reverie for [some] time, just came on to add my thoughts. Peace to all.”
Musk later corrected her saying it wasn’t SR-17 but SR-71 to which the My Name Is Dark” singer replied that she recently undergone a surgery and so wasn’t fully aware of the typos and spelling checks in her caption but it was supposed to be a profound one. The singer was first linked with Elon Musk in May 2018 and even split up later but in January 2020 she posted a picture of her sporting a baby bump and topless. It wasn’t until two months later that Grimes confirmed Musk was the father. They decided to give partnership another shot, for the sake of their kid but ultimately separated paths saying that “they have and will continue to maintain a close friendship.”
Elon first posted a picture of the boy, his debut on Instagram, where he was seen cradling him just at the hospital. Later he posted a couple of other pictures where he put on hilarious filters in his baby boy’s sleeping face, some of tattoos, some of hearts and some of long eyelashes. Grimes also posted pictures with X AE A-XII, her arms wrapped around the bundled baby, cuddling him to sleep and later a close up of him, the first, encouraging Insta followers to register their votes.
Grimes shared a November 2020 Instagram Story photo of her son looking at a board book describing “space telescopes.” Elon was seen multitasking when he cradled his baby son in one arm while managing business calls on the other hand. “The Second Last Kingdom,” Musk captioned the photo on Twitter.
The couple documented their family getaway in Texas as well. On March 2021, Grimes captioned an Instagram story video of the boy playing the synthesizer and giggling as “Omg this solo, so smart”.
Once Elon had to attend virtually a conference at the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine regarding his Starship spacecraft in November 2021. As he talked business with a couple of distinguished panelists on a recorded platform that would be released on you tube as well, his son sat gleefully on his lap, listening intently and providing some cute momentary relief.
When Musk was honored as the Time 2021 Person of the Year in December 2021, he brought his son to the event.
